Where are your olives and olive oils sourced from?
We carry the best Greek olives and olive oils from trusted producers, such as world’s most awarded producer, Sakellaropoulos Organic Farming, which cultivates organic olives near Sparta in the Peloponnese, and Ladi Biosas, known for its groves nestled in the untouched, mountainous areas of Kalamata in Peloponnese, Greece — also Vassilakis Estate in Crete, Wild Olive Oil in Lakonia and the Andriotis Family in Corfu.
Why is olive oil so expensive?
The best Greek olive oils can be expensive due to their labour-intensive production, especially for high-quality extra virgin types that require handpicking and careful pressing. Factors like the exceptional quality of olives, sustainable and organic farming methods, packaging and transportation may also affect costs.
How is olive oil made?
Olive oil is made through an intricate process starting with harvesting and crushing the olives into a paste. This paste undergoes malaxation, where it’s slowly mixed to enhance its flavour and aroma. Then, the mixture is centrifuged to separate the oil from water and solids. All our extra virgin olive oils are cold pressed and unfiltered.
What does extra virgin olive oil mean?
Extra virgin olive oil is cold-pressed, meaning it’s extracted purely through mechanical means without heat or chemicals and must have an acidity level below 1%. It remains unrefined, which helps retain its natural health benefits and high levels of polyphenols and authentic flavours. In contrast, refined oils undergo processing to remove impurities, which can diminish their original taste, aroma and medicinal properties and have higher levels of acidity.
How long does olive oil last?
Its shelf life is based on its type and storage conditions, ranging from 12 to 24 months in an unopened bottle. Extra virgin olive oil tends to last 18 to 24 months due to its lower acidity levels, but it is safe to be consumed even for another 12 months after.
Where does olive oil come from?
Olive oil is produced in several regions around the world, including Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Australia, and parts of South America. Each region contributes its own unique characteristics to the oils.
