FAQs

What is Greek mountain tea?

Greek mountain tea, also known as ironwort or shepherd's tea, is a herbal infusion made from plants in the Sideritis genus, including the well-known Sideritis syriaca. Typically available as dried loose leaves or in tea bags, it’s crafted from freshly harvested herbs native to Greece's high-altitude, rocky regions, most notably grown in the Zagori region of the UNESCO World Geopark Network.

How do you make Greek mountain tea?

When preparing Greek mountain tea from fresh plants, you can use the flowers, stems and leaves, with the flowers being the most essential part. Start by adding six to eight pieces (about 5 cm each) to boiling water. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for five to 10 minutes, depending on the strength you prefer.

If dried leaves or tea bags, add two tablespoons, or a third of a tea bag, to a teapot with boiling water and let it steep for five to 10 minutes. Add a teaspoon of honey, a slice of lemon or milk to enhance your brew’s flavour.

What are the health benefits of Greek mountain tea?

While further research is necessary to solidify findings, Greek mountain tea may offer potential health benefits. According to a 2012 study, when consumed orally, it could positively affect gastrointestinal health and reduce inflammation, presumably due to the plant’s natural phenols and antioxidants.

Another 2012 study conducted on animals concluded that extracts made from sideritis may assist in lowering blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, potentially reducing stress on the heart.

How is Greek oregano different from other oregano?

Greek oregano boasts a more intense, aromatic, earthy and slightly spicy flavour than other varieties, making it the perfect choice for elevating dishes like grilled meats, salads and sauces.

What is Greek coffee?

Greek coffee is a strongly brewed beverage deeply rooted in traditional Greek culture and widely enjoyed across the country. It’s made from finely ground coffee beans and prepared in a distinctive pot called a briki — a tall vessel that offers a unique brewing process. Designed to be sipped slowly, Greek-style coffee is served in a demitasse cup with kaïmaki (foam) at the top and grounds that naturally settle to the bottom.

How do you make Greek coffee?

To prepare traditional Greek coffee, gather the following equipment and ingredients before starting:

Equipment:

  • A briki
  • Heat source — ideally, a gas stove for better control over the brewing process
  • Espresso or traditional demitasse cups

Ingredients:

  • Finely ground organic Greek coffee
  • Cold water
  • Sugar (optional)

Brewing process:

  • Add one demitasse cup of cold water per serving to a briki.
  • Add one heaped teaspoon of finely ground Greek coffee per serving and add or adjust sugar as desired (Sketos: no sugar; Metrios: one teaspoon; Glykos: two teaspoons). Stir gently.
  • Place the briki on low heat and allow the coffee to warm. Stir once, then let it heat undisturbed. When the foam (kaïmaki) rises, remove it from the heat just before it starts to boil.
  • Pour carefully and evenly divide the foam among all cups.

How do you make a Greek frappe?

To make a Greek iced coffee or Dalgona/Frappe, add two teaspoons of Greek coffee, an optional two to four teaspoons of sugar and 50ml of water to a shaker or blender. Shake or blend for a few minutes until you achieve a thick foam consistency. Then, pour your beverage into a glass and add ice cubes and a dash of milk (optional).
